The Jagiellonian Fair Orchestra, The Malisz Band, re:tradition | concerts

Concert Re:tradition– a Workshops of Culture production that every year draws the attention of fans of traditional and contemporary music. The project has been inspired by the programme “Szlekim Kolberga” (On Kolberg’s Trail), it continues the meetings of masters of traditional music with well-known popular musicians.  This year, we will meet Reni Jusis with the instrumentalists Miguel Moon and Michał Piotrowski and Angele Bapkauskiene with the band Saulaues from Puńsk, Manugi Bagpipe Band and Tomasz “Lipa” Lipnicki and  Olaf Deriglasoff with the band of Stefan Wyczyński from Lubcza in a special gathering to remember the band;s leader, Stefan, who passed away in May 2020.

Kapela Maliszów –  The Malisz Band A family band from Męcina Mała in Low Beskid, consisting of  the multi-instrumentalist Jan Malisz and his children Zuzanna and Kaceper.  The band draws inspirations from the traditional music of their region, but also dances and chants from various parts of Poland. The music is performed using traditional instruments, namely the violin, bass and drums; it is performed in an archaic way with a certain amount of freedom, joy and improvisation. They also create their own village-style music that enters into a dialogue with modernity, touching on different style.

The Orchestra’s repertoire consists of traditional dance tunes from the Lublin region: polkas, obereks, the majdaniak, ride tunes, marches, waltzes and foxtrots, taken from archival recordings as well as family traditions of the Orchestra’s leaders; many of the songs have been passed on to them by traditional musicians from the Lublin region  (Stanisław Głaz from Dzwola, Bronisła Bida from Gródki and others). The Orchestra debuted at The Jagiellonian Fair in 2014.
